Support Group for Step-Parents

One Utah County woman is hoping to ease the pain through group therapy. Brenda Smith is a lot like any other mother, organizing fundraisers for her daughter, well her stepdaughter. "I would find total strangers would open up to me and talk to me about similar circumstances and situations they were in. I thought we should all just get together where we could make it a productive chat with some resources and help, instead of a gripe session about the ex-spouses or about the attitudes of the children." Because of the difficulties she found associated with being a stepmother smith figured others out there too needed a support system. Step-Parents Of Teenagers or SPOT, is run by Smith but she isn't alone. Licensed Family and Marriage Therapist Jonathan Sherman is also involved. "The intervention that a group like this can offer is just simply how do we do it. I can use a group like SPOT as a place to make sure what works and what doesn't work." The group will meet every fourth Tuesday at the John Hancock Charter School in Pleasant Grove. |
